  • TorQmax AC Drives

TorQmax™ delivers superior AC VVVF drive performance for geared and gearless applications. Designed specifically for MCE’s PTC-AC Series M and IMCAC control systems, TorQmax is the result of a multi-year development partnership with a leading German drive manufacturer. TorQmax drives have a compact profile, a notable absence of audible motor noise and simple, user-friendly adjustment.

    Benefits

    Performance
TorQmax high performing drives have refined motion control across the full speed spectrum— and virtually eliminated takeoff lag associated with AC elevators. The car moves away from the floor immediately when door lock contact is made because TorQmax drives build required magnetic flux within 100 milliseconds; a significant advancement over AC drives that may take over one second to build flux. The smooth operation of the TorQmax drive—through acceleration, contract speed and deceleration—helps ensure optimal passenger comfort.

    Simplicity
Customized software and preset standard parameters minimize installation time—providing a significant level of simplicity to TorQmax drives. A few simple adjustments (for most applications) enable the car to run at contract speed. And all parameters are set and displayed in common elevator industry units of measure—no conversion charts or interpolation are required.

    Reliability
Since 1983, Motion Control Engineering has developed a reputation as the Premier provider of advanced, non-proprietary elevator control systems in the world. MCE reliability is designed into every product and is supported with unprecedented levels of customer service. MCE’s long list of satisfied customers includes the most trusted names in the elevator industry.

    Features

    16K Pulse Width Modulation
TorQmax uses leading edge 16K PWM technology to full advantage. Unlike previous technologies, PWM uses sinusoidal pulse-width modulation. A high frequency triangle carrier wave is compared with a three phase sinusoidal waveform. The IGBT power devices in each phase are switched on where the sine and triangle waves intersect. The amplitude and frequency of the output voltage are varied using the amplitude and frequency of the reference sine waves.

    Powerback AC Regeneration
The MCE Powerback AC Regeneration system recaptures elevator overhaul energy for other uses. This energy is traditionally dissipated in the form of heat through resistors located in the machine room. By enabling overhaul power to be reused, Powerback eliminates unnecessary machine room heat. At the same time, Powerback reduces machine room cooling requirements and associated operating costs.

    Reuse high slip motors
The TorQmax closed loop drive with encoder allows even existing high slip AC motors to be reused—putting quality elevator performance within reach without motor replacement.

    EMI/RFI compliant
TorQmax Pulse Width Modulation is EMI/RFI friendly technology. TorQmax meets stringent European Union emissions standard EN12015 and immunity standard EN12016. Emission standards establish limits for generation of conducted or radiated energy that could otherwise interfere with other equipment. Immunity standards measure resistance to disruption by energy from external sources.
  • System 12 DC Drives

In the mid 1990s, MCE introduced IMC (Intelligent Motion Control) for motor generators. This technological advancement incorporated two key elements of MCE’s product development strategy:

    • The controller would be digital, and

  • Load Weighing

LWI Load Weighing for Isolated Platform provides signals for various load dispatching operations and pre-torquing for IMC family controllers.

By identifying whether the load in the car is light, heavy or an overload, the system can activate loaded car hall call bypass, anti-nuisance car call cancellation, and lobby up peak mode.

The load weigher=s pre-torquing signal is used to adjust the amount of torque produced by the motor B as the brake lifts B to provide smooth starts. Every time the car leaves a floor, a new value is computed, based on how the car is loaded, insuring that every start is the smoothest possible start.

Without pre-torquing, some slight initial armature rotation occurs as the brake is lifting in order to gain complete control of the motor. As a result, the start may not be as smooth as it could be. With LWI, an initial torque value is determined to exactly counteract any tendency for the motor to move in the direction of the load as the brake is lifted, thereby insuring ideal starts under all load conditions.

    How it Works
The LWI system uses a proximity sensor and amplifier, which are both mounted under the cab floor. The proximity sensor bracket is typically attached to one of the car sling channels underneath the car. A target bracket is attached to the floor itself. The clearance between the sensor and target varies with car loading, generating a signal value from 0 to eight VDC.

    Applications/Limitations
The LWI system is for isolated platform elevators (70-80% of all elevators with contract speed of 500 fpm or more have isolated platform cab construction). The condition and composition of rubber isolation pads (4-6 per cab typical) is critical to successful, reliable operation. Pads should be replaced every five years, or whenever any cracking or damage is detected.

    Advantages
The LWI system provides premium load weighing performance at lower cost.

    • Field-proven hardware components
    • Software and amplifier board used successfully in other MCE products
    • Wiring is easy
    • Rugged components will provide years of reliable, trouble-free operation
    • Simple installation and adjustment
  • Powerback AC Regeneration

The MCE Powerback™ AC Regeneration system provides impressive financial payback by recapturing elevator overhaul energy for other uses. Traditionally, this energy is dissipated in the form of heat through resistors located in the machine room. By enabling overhaul power to be reused, Powerback eliminates unnecessary machine room heat, and reduces machine room cooling requirements and attendant operating costs.

    Advantages

    • Recaptures Overhaul Energy
    • Reduces Machine Room Heat
    • Cuts Cooling Requirements
    • Short-Term Financial Payback
