Innovation in Urban Air Mobility

A New Aerospace Joint Venture from Nidec and Embraer

Electrified aircraft technology is poised to revolutionize the way people travel in urban areas and is gaining interest worldwide as a carbon-neutral form of transportation. Beyond the potential for carbon neutrality, electric aircraft technology offers several benefits including:

  • Quieter Skies - Electric motors generally operate much quieter than traditional combustion-based engines - paving the way for more frequent flights in urban areas without the typical noise pollution.

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency - In comparison to internal combustion engines, electric motors are typically more efficient. This improved efficiency contributes to a significant decrease in energy needs and thus, the cost of air travel.

  • Reduced Operating and Maintenance Costs - With fewer moving parts, electric engines can reduce maintenance costs. As an added bonus, electricity is usually cheaper than aviation fuel and can be renewably sourced - bringing down operation costs.

For these reasons, Nidec has partnered with Brazil-based aviation industry leader, Embraer, to establish Nidec Aerospace. Nidec Aerospace will design and manufacture electric propulsion systems (EPU) for eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, with plans to expand into other parts of the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) market, pioneering efficient and sustainable travel methods for the future.
