Hazardous locations, where the atmosphere may contain dust, gas, or vapor in quantities large enough to be explosive, require specially designed motors. These motors are built to withstand harsh conditions and contain sparks and explosions, preventing external ignition.

Compliance and Safety
The National Electrical Code (NEC®) categorizes hazardous locations into classes and groups based on the specific explosive agent present. For a complete list, refer to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) publication 487M. Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL®) tests and lists motors suitable for these explosive atmospheres. However, using a UL®-listed device does not automatically ensure full compliance with the NEC® or local codes.
