Support from the E3 graduate scheme and my sponsor company Nidec Drives was invaluable during my time at university. I could not recommend the scheme enough to any future engineers. I have made great friends, thoroughly enjoyed my time and gained excellent industry experience.

I also used my standing as a woman in engineering to advocate for more women getting into engineering.

Nidec Drives saw this and asked me to spearhead roundtable interviews where myself and a panel of accomplished engineers and colleagues delved into the vital topic of women in engineering. We shared insights and experiences on a range of issues, including the impact of common school biases that shape career choices, the importance of role models, and how tailoring classes to all genders can create a fairer learning environment.

We shared experiences of navigating a male-dominated field and discussed topics like imposter syndrome. This was an amazing opportunity and something I’m extremely proud of.

Through my time as an E3 graduate, I became a STEM ambassador and IET education volunteer supported by Nidec Drives. The aim was to spread awareness for STEM careers in the local area, giving presentations on careers, coding, electronics and even cyber security. Hoping to answer the most important question, “What is an engineer?”- something I had no idea about at school.

My colleagues and I went out into the community and worked alongside Careers Wales to meet local schools. The teachers advised us that getting in young professionals to speak to students boosts their interest in the subject and gets them talking and asking STEM questions. The students need to see someone like us, especially young women, so that STEM careers don’t seem so alien. I remember being inspired by the guest speakers who came to my school, and I want to do the same for someone else. This is also a great opportunity to improve soft skills like communication and management.

To anyone wanting to pursue sciences, maths, engineering and technology – do what you love, and the right people will support you.
