Consul-General Jun Yanagi presents Greg Gorman with the Foreign Minister’s Commendation

St. Louis  - February 9, 2024 - The Japanese Government has presented Greg Gorman, Chief Growth Officer of Nidec’s Motion & Energy business unit, with the Foreign Minister’s Commendation in recognition of his contributions to U.S.-Japan Relations as the President of the Japan America Society of St. Louis.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs awards the Foreign Minister’s Commendation to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields to acknowledge their promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. 

The award was presented by the Consul-General of Japan in Chicago, Mr. Jun Yanagi, at the Japan America Society of St. Louis’ Japanese New Year celebration on January 20th. Consul-General Yanagi praised Gorman’s many contributions to the St. Louis Japanese community, citing his achievement in facilitating a “deeper cooperation” within local Japan-related organizations through his work.
Gorman has promoted cultural exchange as a representative of Nidec and as the President of the Japan America Society of St. Louis, including sponsoring the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Japanese Festival and bringing business-related U.S.-Japan events to St. Louis.

Gorman’s connection with Japan began when he studied abroad in Japan as a college student, and later returned as a young professional as part of Nippon Electric’s (NEC) Planning and Corporate Business Development department. He joined Nidec in 2007, and in 2013, after having spent 15 years living in Japan, moved to St. Louis after Nidec acquired Emerson’s appliance, commercial and industrial electric motor and controls business.

Even after his return to the U.S., Gorman maintained his ties to Japan with his appointment to the board of the Japan America Society of St. Louis in 2015, and later expanded his involvement when he was appointed President in 2018.

In his acceptance speech, Gorman cited Nidec’s role in his work in cultural exchange. “We’re a global company with Japanese roots,” he explained. “Nidec’s global mindset and continued dedication to its many and diverse group companies has amplified the impact I’m able to make for this cause in my community and abroad”.
