Nidec Netherlands has built a strong reputation for delivering a wide range of motors, generators, and controllers, including frequency converters, DC controllers, and servo drives to machine builders, system integrators, and partners throughout the Benelux region.
With decades of expertise in drive technology, Nidec has remained closely attuned to the evolving needs of the market. In 2016, this commitment to innovation led to the development of the Drive Freestanding (DFS) frequency converter, a compact, ready-to-use solution housed in a robust cabinet.
Designed with practicality in mind, the DFS features a 100mm base, fast-acting fuses, a main switch, a front-facing display with Real Time Clock, and a roof-mounted fan with thermostat. Capable of controlling power outputs up to 2.8 MW, it offers a plug-and-play setup that’s fast to install and easy to swap out, making it ideal for high-demand environments where downtime comes at a premium.
Whether for new installations or rapid replacements, the DFS delivers reliability, efficiency, and peace of mind.
Cooling with confidence
One of the standout users of Nidec’s DFS frequency converter is Top Cold Control, a specialist in industrial refrigeration technology serving sectors such as logistics and the food industry.
Arjan Maas, Operational Manager at Top Cold Control, shares his experience:
"When choosing AC drives in our cooling systems, reliability, quality and futureproofing are essential. The DFS provides us with important advantages as a system builder. For example, the drive is delivered as a complete, self-contained system in a cabinet, including cooling, security and filters. This saves us time and reduces installation errors on site. In addition, the built-in control offers advanced control options and is easy to integrate into our PLC control. This increases the efficiency of the entire cooling or climate system."
Maas is also pleased with the cooperation with Nidec. "At Nidec, we deal with short lines of communication, good advice and very good service. The Drive Freestanding contributes to energy savings and fits within our vision of sustainable technology. Through optimal speed management, we reduce consumption and wear and tear of components. Last but not least, Nidec delivers fast, enabling us to help customers quickly and professionally."
Top Cold Control’s feedback reflects the versatility of the DFS. Its modular design allows precise configuration for specific applications. Users can choose from platforms such as the Unidrive M700, Unidrive M701, HVAC Drive H300, or Pump Drive F600, with a version available that delivers up to 500 kW in a single power module.
The M700 is ideal for controlling all motor types, while the HVAC and Pump Drive variants are tailored to their respective applications. The DFS excels in high-power environments, including pumps, fans, compressors, extruders, and hammer mills.
Additional options include:
- Raised base (200mm instead of 100mm)
- 180° door hinges and keyed cylinder locks
- Speed-controlled roof fan for energy-efficient cooling
- EMC cable clamps and filters
Marco van den Berg adds:
"One increasingly popular feature is the certified kWh meter, which enables official energy monitoring. It comes pre-wired with the necessary power transformers. Other options include tripping coils or zero-voltage coils on the main switch, auxiliary contacts, and custom cabinet space for user components or cabling."
Thanks to its certifications and water-cooling capabilities, the DFS is also suitable for maritime applications.
Convenience meets Innovation
Teun van Breugel explains the broader impact of the DFS:
"This is a fully developed product, no need to figure out how to fit the controller and components into a cabinet. The DFS is a Dutch innovation now used worldwide, with production facilities on every continent. Nidec Netherlands serves as the European production hub, the home of the ."
He continues:
"It’s plug-and-play ready, with a multilingual HMI and Connect PC tool that simplify commissioning. The cabinet arrives complete, with all calculations, heat dissipation, cooling, power requirements, and communication system integration, already validated."
This compact, all-in-one solution is ideal for retrofits, easily integrated into existing setups and suitable for high-capacity demands. In emergencies, a faulty controller can be replaced quickly, thanks to Nidec’s well-managed stock, delivery within a week is often possible.
Every detail has been considered. The result? A reliable, efficient, and future-ready solution that’s transforming industries across Europe and beyond.
