ST. LOUIS, MO – Aug. 25, 2023 – The development of "smart" pumping systems with smart motors is key to meeting the growing demand for water efficiency programs to handle not only drought conditions but also to better monitor and reduce energy usage. Nidec/U.S. MOTORS® has focused considerable resources on developing motor and control technologies to help solve these critical industry needs, and will feature its latest solutions at WEFTEC 2023, set for October 2-4.

Engineering, sales, and support staff from Nidec (Booth #1838) will be available to talk to attendees about the newest motor and pump technologies and the advantages they bring to water, wastewater and irrigation applications. Several Nidec staff will make presentations at the booth on relevant topics (see schedule at end of press release).

“At Nidec, we have invested significantly in motor solutions to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact in pumping applications,” said Patrick Hogg, Director of Marketing for Industrial Pumping & Distribution at Nidec Motor Corporation. “We now provide electric motors that surpass NEMA Premium efficiency levels, with variable speed operation, closed loop control systems, and overall ability for variable demand response.”

At the heart of smart pumping systems are Electronically Commutated Motors (ECMs), synchronous motors, and motors integrated with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). Intelligent pump systems can minimize energy consumption and simplify installation and maintenance. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies such as ECM, advanced sensors, real-time data analysis, and automation, pumping systems can optimize water usage, detect anomalies, and adapt to changing conditions.

Hogg said Nidec is closely monitoring the industry’s response to the Inflation Reduction Act and other government incentive programs designed to spur investment in sustainable energy reduction and production.

“Pumps are a considerable source of energy consumption and therefore a huge target for improvement,” Hogg said.
“We believe the pump industry sits on the edge of a huge opportunity: the chance to change how we think about energy consumption within pumping systems. That’s why we continue to bring solutions that will benefit the industry.”

This year at WEFTEC, Nidec is featuring its SynRA™ super premium synchronous motor, as well as the ID300 PerfectspeedTM, a “plug and play” drive integrated with the SynRA motor for easy programming, installation and maintenance. Other integrated motors and controllers as well as pumping products and freestanding packaged solutions from Nidec’s Control Techniques division will also be featured. CT products offer smart VFD pump control, digital communication, and high-power VFD solutions up to 4,200 hp.

The HOLLOSHAFT® vertical motor from US MOTORS® will also be on display. The iconic deep-well pump motor was the first to successfully address scarce water in California more than a century ago and continues to evolve with today’s technology to address critical irrigation and water supply needs.
